Actividades del Comité Arecibeño por la Conservación de las Tortugas Marinas

In Puerto Rico, Arecibo Committee for the Conservation of Sea Turtles, performs numerous educational activities and protection of sea turtles.

In the area between Arecibo and Barceloneta, protects Leatherback nesting numbers, Dermochelys coriacea, the world's largest turtle, the only of its kind, which is characterized by a leathery skin and 7 longitudinal ridges on the back

The approximately fifteen members of the group, in addition to protecting the nests, give talks to community and schools. The relt of their efforts this year are beaches in Hatillo, which has joined the initiative of residents there, who had the inquitud to protect this species nested there who understood that and so is and are organizing their help.

The leatherback turtle lives in the ocean all his life, from birth Males do not return to the mainland ever, and only for nesting females, this makes more critical the need to protect any necessary nesting sites, for now is the weakest link for preservation. Costa Rica has the privilege of being one of them.

The Arecibo Committee for the Conservation of Sea Turtles, among its many training activities, currently protect various species of sea turtles, and report "when we have some 100 leatherback nests 94 5 and 58 hawksbill hatchlings. Mostly what we have is leatherback. this year by the high temperatures there is a high rate of babies who died, very sad for others. "

Turtles inhabiting the land in the Eocene, before the dinosaurs and have rvived until today almost without evolution, adaptation is so prodigious that inhabit the entire planet, except for the polar regions, rvived the great cataclysms of the earth, including forced the extinction of the dinosaurs, but are unable to rvive the elimination of their nesting sites from the human species.

So it is our responsibility to protect their areas of animation, and this should not necessarily imply economic decline for the residents of areas near nest sites, if not the opposite, well managed is an important source of funds through tourism and fishing, if fishing, extensive coastal protection are helping commercial species to reproduce, and act as nurseries..

Problems and more problems

They tell us "We had problems with people involved with spectators nests by not being informed and damage our data but these are isolated cassis. The biggest problem is the light pollution that if we had cases of disoriented turtles and guided by the light went to the street or in another case a stream of fresh water, which we saw were rescued, one hit by a car and died of dehydration by others who went to a focus attracted by light. We have no car problems allowed running down the beach and horses and campfires. "
